About Paperback

Paperback is a clean and simple way to read Pinboard articles later. It uses the Pinboard API to sync saved posts marked "to read" and formats them without ads, ugly fonts, or any of that cruft. It's a fully responsive web app with a great experience on both desktop and mobile. If you're not familiar with it, Pinboard is a bookmarking service that lets you save URLs, tag them, and if you've upgraded, archive them so you have a permanent, offline store of every link you've saved.

Since I see Paperback as an extension of the great work that Maciej has been doing with Pinboard, it shares many of the same values:

Paperback costs $15. It's a paid service which allows me to make it a sustainable service.

How Paperback is Different

There's a lot of "read later" services out there. Some are really good. I've used and loved Instapaper for a long time but more recently, I've become interested in controlling the digital things I do and create. The stuff I read online is really important to me and I wanted it to live in a place that was private and secure, and allowed me to easily retrieve my information. Pinboard is that service but it didn't have the great reading experience of Instapaper.

So think of Paperback as an independent read-later client on the powerful Pinboard "engine."

What you can do with Paperback

  1. Read things
  2. Archive things back into Paperback (with tags or other metadata, if you'd like)
  3. Delete things

There's a reading list of all your unread posts. It looks like this:

Clicking/tapping on the title (or on Read) takes you to the article view, which is cleanly formatted. You can also hit Original to see the URL that you saved, or Archive to remove it from your reading list.

You can also use keyboard shortcuts to get around when you're at a computer. These are the shortcuts for the reading list:

j or Select next article

k or Select previous article

r or enter Open selected article

a or e Archive selected article

o Go to original URL of selection

⌘ + delete Delete selected article

The article view looks like this:

The content is parsed from the original page so it's easy to read. On this page, you can do a few things. First, enjoy reading the article. I want Paperback to be like a good book. When you're done, you can hit Archive to mark it as read on Pinboard. You can also hit Tag and Archive (and in some cases, the button is just labeled Tag) to add metadata to the post and then mark it as read. This archives it in Pinboard. You can delete and also navigate to other posts.

On desktop, these shortcuts will help you navigate really smoothly:

j or Scroll down | k or Scroll up

a or e Archive selected article

h Go back to reading list

t Open "Archive with Tags" modal - esc closes it

T Add selected text to Archive modal without opening modal

⌘ + enter Submit Tags and Archive

o Open original URL

⌘ + delete Delete current article

p / n Go to previous / next article

Switching to Paperback

It's easy to switch to Paperback because Pinboard has importing from Instapaper, Readability, or Pocket built in. Just go to Pinboard Settings, enter that services information and select "Auto-add bookmarks from this" and mark them as unread.

It looks and works great on all of your devices.
